Some moments in life beautifully blend the past and the present, creating memories that span generations. One such moment was when I visited Cerveceria La Tropical in Miami with my mom. This visit was more than just lunch—it was a heartfelt journey into our family’s history and our Cuban heritage.

Cerveceria La Tropical: Like Home to My Family

La Tropical holds a special place in our hearts. My grandfather worked at the original La Tropical Brewery in Havana during the 1950s and 1960s. My mom spent time there as a child. Her stories were filled with nostalgia, painting a picture of a time when the brewery was not just a workplace but a vibrant social hub.

As we walked into the modern La Tropical in Miami, I saw emotions welling up in my mom’s eyes. The brewery, nestled in the lively Wynwood Arts District, blends contemporary charm and history. The entrance, adorned with lush greenery and vibrant murals, felt like stepping into a portal that bridged two eras. I feel a little proud every time I talk about it.

From its humble beginnings to its status as a cultural icon, the brewery has committed to craftsmanship and tradition. It reminds us that some things, like a good brew, only get better with age.

Today, the original brewery in Havana and its once-majestic parties have weathered time, bearing the scars of age and revolution. While efforts to restore it exist, La Tropical is now a relic of a bygone era.

A Short History of Cerveceria La Tropical

La Tropical Brewery started in 1888, founded by Federico Kohly and Vicente Martinez Ybor. It quickly became the largest Cuban beer brand worldwide. The brewery’s success endured even through the Cuban revolution, showing its resilience and quality.

Manuel Portuondo, dedicated to reviving this iconic brand, has brought new life to La Tropical by establishing it in Miami. This modern brewery pays tribute to its roots while embracing contemporary brewing techniques, blending tradition and innovation.

Located in the Wynwood Arts District, Cervecería La Tropical honors its Cuban roots while embracing Miami’s multicultural spirit. The brewery’s taproom and outdoor beer garden offer a welcoming place to gather and enjoy a cold beer. Who doesn’t love a tropical escape?

Beer List at Cerveceria La Tropical

Tucked away off the main road, the new La Cervecería La Tropical Brewery offers an oasis amidst the urban landscape. With expertly crafted beers inspired by Cuban flavors and ingredients, it’s a nod to the Cerveceria’s past and a promise of a bright future. My flight included a crisp lager with a hint of tropical fruitiness and a bold ale that’ll knock your flip-flops off. They’ve got something for every beer lover. The flagship Tropical Lager stood out with its refreshing taste and subtle hints of tropical fruit.

The Pavilion: Still a Hub of Social Activity

In addition to its delicious beers, La Cervecería La Tropical hosts various events, celebrating Miami’s vibrant community. Whether it’s live music, art exhibitions, or food festivals, there’s always something exciting happening at the brewery.

Culinary Delights: Chef Cindy Hutson’s Creations

But my favorite part of the experience was the food. Executive Chef Cindy Hutson’s culinary playfulness shines through, with Cuban and Caribbean-inspired eats that’ll have your taste buds dancing. Cuban Sandwich empanadas bursting with flavor and Fish Tacos with tasty cilantro crema were excellent starters. Curry jerk chicken wings with pink peppercorn ranch topped my list—just thinking about it makes my mouth water.

A Day of Reflection and Celebration

Our visit to La Tropical Brewery was more than just a casual outing. We honored the legacy of my Abuelo and the workers who built the original brewery. We also celebrated the vibrant culture that thrives in Miami. Cerveceria La Tropical, with its blend of historical homage and modern innovation, left an indelible mark on our hearts. It’s more than just a brewery—it’s a living testament to the resilience, creativity, and spirit of the Cuban people. For my mom and me, it’s a cherished link to our family’s history.
